How the Pre-Open Session Works?
Every trading day (Mon–Fri), NSE runs a 15-minute pre-open session before regular trading begins at 9:15 AM.
- 1
9:00 – 9:08 AM - Order Entry

NSE calculates the IEP — the price that matches the maximum buy and sell orders. No new orders accepted.
- 3
9:12 – 9:15 AM - Buffer & Transition
Orders confirmed at IEP. Market prepares to open. Regular trading begins at exactly 9:15 AM.

What is the NSE Pre-Open Market?
Every morning, before regular trading begins at 9:15 AM, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) runs a special 15-minute session called the Pre-Open Market. During this window, traders can submit buy and sell orders for Nifty 50 stocks.
NSE takes all these orders and runs an algorithm to find the single price at which the maximum number of orders can be matched. This price is called the IEP — Indicative Equilibrium Price. It becomes the opening price when regular trading begins at 9:15 AM.
This ensures a smooth, fair start to the trading day — especially on volatile days, or when big news has come in overnight.
Think of it as a warm-up round before the race.
The pre-open session sets a fair starting price so the market doesn't open in chaos when big news has come in overnight.
