What is the F&O Ban List?

The F&O Ban List is a list of stocks in the Futures & Options (F&O) segment where trading restrictions are temporarily imposed by the exchange due to excessive speculative positions.

In India, both National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and BSE Limited monitor this daily.

How Does MWPL Work?

A stock enters the F&O ban list when the total open interest (OI) crosses 95% of its MWPL limit.

Example

MWPL of a stock = 100 crore contracts

Total active F&O positions = 95 crore contracts

This means the stock has reached 95% MWPL usage and enters the F&O ban period.

During this period:

  • Fresh F&O positions are restricted
  • Existing positions can only be reduced or squared off

The stock exits the ban list once open interest falls below 80% of MWPL.

What is MWPL & How it Works?

MWPL (Market Wide Position Limit) is the maximum limit of open Futures & Options positions allowed for a stock in the market.

The exchange sets this limit based on:

  • Free-float shares available
  • Market liquidity
  • Risk management regulations

MWPL helps exchanges control excessive speculative activity in F&O trading.
